Demonstration and supervised practice of basic nursing skills based on scientific principles and correlated with concepts from theory. Planning and implementing basic patient care are practiced in a simulated clinical setting. Relationships between these concepts and nursing skills relevant to steps in the nursing process; assessment, planning, implementing, evaluation and documentation are practiced. Students demonstrate competent skill performance in a simulated clinical setting.

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Perform selected basic nursing skills safely and competently in the
  simulated clinical setting (laboratory) consistent with theoretical
  knowledge base and skills text criteria.
2. "Check-Off" given a clinical scenario, such as:
  a. independently perform skill with minimal prompting from instructor
3. "Check-Off" successfully within a maximum of 3 attempts/skill.

BASIC NURSING SKILLS:
1. Vital Signs
2. Personal Hygiene Skills (i.e. Baths, Bedmaking, Oral Care)
3. Transfer Skills (i.e. Ambulation, Use of Assistive Devices)
ELIMINATION:
1. Sterile Urine Collection
2. Catheter Care
3. Enemas
4. Suppositories
5. Monitoring Accurate Outputs
6. Colostomy Care
NUTRITION:
1. Feeding of dependent patients.
2. Naso-gastric intubation.
3. Naso-gastric tube feedings.
4. Monitoring Accurate Intake.
SAFETY/PROTECTION:
1. Standard Precautions.
2. Special Precautions.
3. Sterile Technique & Principles.
4. Sterile Gloving.
PROCEDURES/TREATMENTS:
1. Simple Sterile Dressing Change.
2. Respiratory Therapy Treatments (i.e. ABT's, oxygen therapy)
3. Non-injectable Medications and Principles of Administration

Assignments:

1.  Attend scheduled demonstrations of identified nursing skills.
2. Supervised practice and competent performance of nursing skills.
3. Independently and safely performs each skill with a maximum of three
  attempts at "check-offs" to demonstrate competency to instructor.
