This course will cover the anatomy and physiology of major body organs and their functions, as they relate to preparation for surgery, surgery assistance, surgical and dental instruments and packs, anesthesia induction, monitoring and anesthetic machine maintenance, anatomy of the mouth and dental arcade, dental prophylaxis and extractions.

This course will cover the anatomy and physiology of major body organs and their functions in dogs and cats as it relates to preparation for surgery, surgery assistance, surgical and dental instruments and packs, anesthesia induction, monitoring and anesthetic machine maintenance, anatomy of the mouth and dental arcade, dental prophylaxis and extractions.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Describe surgery protocols and be able to explain them to clients.
2. Evaluate and prioritize surgical procedures, patient
monitoring.
3. Explain how to evaluate, respond to, and prepare for emergencies.
4. Determine proper surgical prep for various procedures.
5. Determine proper use of an anesthetic machine and its maintenance.
6. Identify risk factors for different ages, species, and diseases.
7. Evaluate and classify proper medical records protocols.
8. Explain dental protocols and be able to recite them to clients.
9. Describe dental anatomy, patient monitoring, post dental
recommendations.
10. Appraise proper setup for various dental procedures.
11. Identify dental equipment and describe how to care for it.

2. Injectable anesthetics and standard dog, cat, rat, rabbit, reptile,
and ferret surgical preps.
3. Anesthesia machine function and maintenance.
4. Surgical anatomy of the thoracic and abdominal cavities.
5. Basic necropsy procedures.
6. Setting up for a surgical procedure and aseptic technique.
7. Surgical assistance and suture materials selection.
8. Instrument uses, identification, and pack organization.
9. Emergency responses, evaluation, and preparation.
10. Organization and triage of surgical cases, and post surgical care.
11. Understanding the relative risks of surgery and anesthesia.
12. Intubation, induction, and anesthetic plane assessment.
13. Surgical anatomy of the skeletal system.
14. IV catheter placement.
15. Normal dental eruption patterns for dogs and cats.
16. Diseases of the oral cavity.
17. Surgical anatomy of the oral cavity.
