Catalog Description:

An introduction to planning age-appropriate curriculum for young children, including how to use the environment as a foundation for curriculum and how to plan and implement ongoing curriculum and activities based on a framework. This course emphasizes design and implementation of curriculum. Access to a supervised group of children is required.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

  Students will be able to:

 1.  develop and implement appropriate curriculum that reflects age and

     diversity of the children served.

 2.  create a thematic, integrated curriculum plan.

 3.  develop curriculum around a framework using the environment of

     the classroom for a foundation.

 4.  include the concept of emergent curriculum in a curriculum plan.

 5.  include play as a major element in curriculum design and imple-

     mentation

Topics and Scope

1. Framework for planning curriculum

  a. physical environment as a foundation of curriculum

  b. how children learn through play

  c. developmentally appropriate expectations for each age

  d. the teacher's role in curriculum

     1) interacting with children (the interpersonal role)

     2) managing the classroom (safety, record keeping, meetings,

        parent conferences)

     6) developing personal qualities (self-awareness, proactivity)

Assignments:

  1.  Observation and evaluation of program environment.

 2.  Development and implementation of age appropriate activities that

     are part of an integrated, thematic curriculum.

 3.  Develop a monthly, weekly and daily plan for a designated age group:

     IT, preschool and primary age children.

 4.  Read text and misc. handouts.

 5.  Prepare and present and evaluate appropriate activities to both

     children and to fellow classmates.

 6.  Plan curriculum utilizaing a variety of curriculum models.

 7.  Develop a parent involvement plan for program curriculum.
