At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Define a vocabulary of approximately 300 words.
2. Parse regular verbs and nouns in sentences taken from classical texts.
3. Comprehend and translate the simple prose of ancient Hebrew
literature.
4. Appraise the premises and limitations of diverse translation of
Hebrew literature.
5. Describe the contrasting structures of Semitic and Indo-European
languages.
6. Interpret the way aesthetic components of the language impact meaning.
7. Cite linguistic examples illustrating cultural diversity.

2. Systems of pronunciation and orthography.
3. Principles of problems of translation.
4. Relationship of ancient Hebrew literature to later religious creeds.
5. Salient moments of the evolution of the Hebrew language over the

6. Introduction to the principles of Semitic philology and linguistics.
7. Principles of using linguistic evidence in dating and evaluating
ancient texts.
