A survey course that compares the communication of the following groups within the larger context of United States culture: African, Asian, Chicano, Latino, European, Indigenous Peoples of the Americas, and Middle Eastern.  The course will focus on the interaction between members of different cultures.  When appropriate, the course will also examine how issues of sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, and deaf culture structure the communication of all people. 1. Describe, compare, and analyze a variety of culturally-based

  communication behaviors.

2. Choose and practice methods for communicating between different

  cultures.

3. Describe and compare culturally-based differences in cognitive

  styles and world views.

4. Describe and compare the differences within a culture or ethnic

  group.

5. Describe and discuss their own cultural communication behaviors.

6. Discuss and practice listening skills related to intercultural

  communication.

7. Discuss and practice communication skills related to intercultural

competence.

1. The nature of United States Cultural Groups (African American,

  Asian American, Latino American, European American, Indigenous

  Peoples of the Americas, and Middle-Eastern American).

2. Communication and Culture.

3. Degrees of Interculturalness.

4. Related Cultural Variables (sexual orientation, age, religion,

  disability, and deaf cultures).

5. Intercultural Communication Competence.

6. Forces that Create Cultural Differences.

7. Components of Cultural Patterns (beliefs, values, norms).

8. Taxonomies of Cultural Patterns (Hall, Hofstede, Bond, Stewart).

9. Verbal Codes.

10 Nonverbal Codes.

11 Cultural Variations in Language Use.

12 Application of Intercultural Communication Theories in Different

  Areas of Endeavor: Business, Education, Medicine.

13 Obstacles to Intercultural Competence (ethnocentrism, stereotyping,

  prejudice, discrimination, and racism).

14 Outcomes of Intercultural Contact (assimilation, accommodation, and

  acculturation).

15 Theoretical Underpinnings of Intercultural Interpersonal Communication

  (communication accommodation, uncertainty reduction, and layers of

  intolerance).

Assignments:

1. Experiential games and simulation exercises.

2. Participation in various forms of intercultural communication.

3. Field work (study communication behaviors of a culture when

  members of that culture communicate with members of another

  culture).

4. Objective and essay-type midterm examination based on lecture and

  reading.

5. Objective and essay-type final examination based on lecture and

  reading.

6. Written analysis of communication behavior in student's own culture,

  co-culture, nationality, or ethnicity.
