Second semester maternal child course for full time vocational nursing program. Application of concepts learned in prerequisite and corequisite theory and skills lab courses. Care of the normal and acute care of the obstetric, neonate, and pediatric clients. An emphasis on normal growth and development process in relationship to disease is emphasized. The family as a whole system of interactions for patient teaching and the administration of culturally sensitive care is applied to diverse clinical settings (i.e. nursery school, clinics, hospitals and intermediate residential care facilities). Orem's self-care deficit theory is the base for applying the nursing process for assigned clients.

Course Completion of NRV 51L and Concurrent Enrollment in NRV 52.2 ( or NRV 52B) and Concurrent Enrollment in NRV 58B

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Under the following conditions:
1. Students will be under the direct supervision of instructors and
resource nurses in labor/delivery postpartum and newborn settings.
2. Students will be supervised less closely in nursery school, clinics, &
residential care facilities by instructors, while being guided in their
observations and skills by licensed staff.
3. Students will be accountable and responsible for actions and practice
both fundamental and increasingly complex intermediate skills.
4. Students will apply theoretical concepts to the individual clinical
setting and the assigned patients.
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Apply all previously learned concepts maintaining prior skills and by
being able to apply rationales for the care being given.
2. Prioritize and organize care of 2-4 patients in the acute setting and
begin to develop skills for care in the ambulatory care setting.
3. Continue to apply culturally sensitive care while communicating clearly
and providing a safe environment.
4. Continue to provide care in a professional and ethical manner with an
increasing ability to perceive actual and potential ethical dilemmas for
families and individual patients.
5. Document accurately with an increased ability to evaluate outcomes.
6. Contribute to the nursing care plans and develop patient-centered
teaching skills.
7. Perform as a team member with an increasing ability to provide reports
for the oncoming shift, resource nurses and physicians.

Topics and Scope

1. Application of medical/surgical principles to the perinatal setting.
2. Observation of the birthing process.
3. Assessment of immediate postpartum clients.
4. Immediate newborn assessment.
5. Application of growth and development to clinical setting in the
  nursery school, residential care and clinic facilities.
6. Immunization schedules and routine assessments for children of all ages
  seen in the ambulatory care setting.
7. Documentation of normal growth and development charts in the clinic
  setting.
8. Age appropriate teaching techniques.
9. Age appropriate techniques for administering medications and treatments
  to children in the clinic and residential care settings.
10. Common parenting and child-rearing concerns and issues.
11. Common nursing procedures, assessments and diagnostic tests such as:
  a. Postpartum and newborn assessments.
  b. Sterile technique for "setting-up" for delivery & cesarean sections.
  c. Administration of vitamin K and erythromycin for infants.
  d. Sitz baths, special peri-care, cord care, circumcision care and
     breast care (to name a few).
  e. Special safety measures (holding of infants, clearing airways,
     positioning and other specifics related to developmental phases.
  f. Immunizations of infants and children.
  g. Care of developmentally delayed children with special skills for
     feeding (gastrostomy), seizure assessment and behavior modification.
 h. Pharmacologic interventions for needs of postpartum, postop c-section
    and labor/delivery, preterm patients.

Assignments:

1. Preparation of adequate data bases and worksheets for planning care.
2. Assignments of 2-4 patients per clinical day in the acute perinatal
setting for a total of 4-6 days of postpartum rotation.
3. Assignments of accurate observation and data collection of normal vs.
abnormal growth and development of preschool children and developmentally
delayed children in intermediate care facilities (ICFDD).
4. Participation in the VN scope of care in the ICFDD residential care
setting with a focus of planning care and administering treatment and
meds for a minimum of 1 client.
5. Observation of a minimum of 1 delivery, 1 labor patient, 1 c-section,
and routine of newborn nursery care for a total of 4-5 day rotations.
6. Administration of all medications within VN scope of practice for
obstetric and pediatric clients.
7. Give a minimum of one teaching demonstration to peers for a specific
perinatal or newborn problem/scenario.
8. Participate in ward conferences by offering examples of problems and
interventions for mother and infant care on assigned patients.
