Description:

The Juvenile Correctional Officer Basic Course Skills Certificate is a state mandated course of instruction for entry-level staff currently employed or seeking employment as a juvenile counselor. The Juvenile Correctional Officer course is designed to ensure safe, secure, humane and constructive care for minors under the officers' supervision and control. The course includes orientation, transportation, daily care and custody, report writing, handling emergencies, and other tasks as required. In addition to earning this certificate, completers may need additional qualifying experience and/or to meet specific hiring agency requirements before obtaining employment in this occupational field. The field of corrections has been identified as one of the growth areas for employment, both locally and nationwide. Juvenile correctional officers are positions at local county juvenile hall facilities. This career field is open to individuals interested in working with juvenile offenders incarcerated for minor offenses.

Program Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this program, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify and demonstrate major tasks and responsibilities of juvenile correction officer in juvenile detention facilities in the State of California as defined in the latest statewide job analysis;
  2. identify and describe the overall mission of a juvenile corrections officer and its place in the California Criminal Justice System as established in state law.
