Description:

The Civil and Surveying Technology: Civil Engineering Certificate of Achievement prepares students for technical positions in the civil engineering, land development, land planning and engineering construction professions.

Civil engineering and land surveying are the oldest, largest and most diverse disciplines of the engineering profession. The Civil and Surveying Technician with an emphasis in civil engineering may help plan, design, inspect, develop, maintain, test, manage and administer: public works, land development, urban renewal, and transportation projects, water distribution systems, waste water treatment facilities, and land and geographic information systems.

Employment is available in design, land development, planning, construction inspection and estimating, project administration and management, soil and materials testing. The civil engineering professions continue to offer excellent employment opportunities. Opportunities are available in both public service and private enterprise, offering a wide range of career opportunities to satisfy individual interests, aptitudes, and goals.

Employers generally report that it is very difficult to find applicants who meet their hiring standards. This indicates a very good outlook for qualified job seekers.

The Civil & Surveying Technician may choose a civil engineering, construction, planning or public works occupational path. Regardless of the choice of discipline, the career ladder is very similar. Some firms or agencies have more than one discipline represented.

Course Prerequisites and Advisories:

Courses in a program of study may have prerequisites or advisories; that is, courses that must or should be completed before taking that course. Please check for prerequisites or advisories by clicking on the course numbers in the Program Requirements section.

It is important that students who are completing an Associate Degree and desire to transfer to a four-year institution meet with a counselor to plan their lower division coursework. While many majors at SRJC are intended to align with lower division major preparation required by California public universities, specific lower-division major requirements vary among individual campuses. Notes:

It is recommended that students who have not had high school courses in mathematics through plane geometry take the Math placement test and enroll in an appropriate course (eg, CSKL 371, CSKL 372, MATH 150A & B, or MATH 151) prior to enrolling in certificate program courses.

For students with limited computer literacy, CIS 101A OR CIS 101B is recommended. Please contact the department or a counselor for more information.
