The SRJC Jazz Combos are dedicated to the study, rehearsal, and performance of classic and contemporary works for small jazz ensemble. Students are divided into three combos of 4-8 musicians, each focusing on 4-5 jazz compositions. Students in 42C focus on developing their improvisatory fluency in the styles of Bop, Cool, and Hard Bop. The Jazz Combos give 3-5 public performances per semester.

COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Perform jazz music with effectiveness and confidence in a small combo.
2.       Demonstrate improvisational creativity through the concentrated study and performance of jazz compositions in the Bop, Cool, and Hard Bop styles.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Perform jazz compositions in the Bop, Cool, and Hard Bop styles.
2. Improvise solos based on Bop, Cool, and Hard Bop compositions.
3. Demonstrate listening and performance skills related to interaction with other musicians.
 
Students repeating Jazz Combo Ensemble will be able to perform more difficult repertoire and perform at a higher level of musicianship each semester.

Topics and Scope

Music rehearsal is a fully-integrated experience that encompasses both lecture and lab activities.
 
I.   Concentrated Study of Representative Works by Bop, Cool, and Hard Bop Composers such as Parker, Gillespie, Monk, Silver, and Brubeck
II.  Ensemble Performance Skills such as Intonation, Rhythmic Precision, and Dynamics
III. Public Performance in a Variety of Venues
    A. Classroom
    B. Outdoor
    C. Jazz festival
    D. Concert hall
IV. In-Concert Performances and Clinics with Guest Artists
 
Students repeating Jazz Combo Ensemble will perform more advanced repertoire each semester; thus, enhancing their skill level, knowledge of the repertoire, and command of improvisational techniques.

Assignments:

1. In-class rehearsal and preparation of selected works
2. Analysis of extended and substitute chords used in the music of the 1940s and 1950s
3. Each semester, the selected repertoire may dictate additional assignments in order to meet the requirements for that literature
4. Outside practice of their instrument (ungraded)
5. Participation in additional rehearsals, when called
6. Participation in concerts, tours, and/or other field trips as scheduled
7. Final exam will be a public concert
Students repeating Jazz Combo Ensemble will be held to higher standards of performance with each repetition.
