COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Analyze and respond to reading selections encountered in health science certificate and associate degree programs and their prerequisite courses.

2. Employ grammar, writing, speaking, and listening skills to effectively communicate with healthcare professionals, patients, and their families in a given healthcare setting.

3. Apply vocabulary, medical terminology, and culturally appropriate language to communicate in the healthcare industry.

 

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Read and comprehend health and medical-related articles and essays.

2. Summarize reading selections.

3. Use critical thinking and inference to discuss implications of a topic to the medical and health community and patients.

4. Demonstrate use of advanced grammar structures to generate questions for information gathering and make statements for explaining procedures to healthcare professionals and patients.

5. Write on a given topic using appropriate grammar structures.

6. Use contextual clues to determine meaning of vocabulary words.

7. Utilize affixes and roots to determine meaning of medical terminology.

8. Demonstrate appropriate oral communication skills in healthcare settings.

    D. Advanced grammar structure review (adjective clause, passive voice, noun clause, modal, imperative)

    E. Paragraph writing for summaries, personal responses, and case studies

III. Oral Skills

    A. Pronunciation related to medical terminology
