Self-assessment skills will continue to be developed by working with patients in the Santa Rosa Junior College Dental Hygiene Clinic. Students will achieve beginner level at the conclusion of this course.

1. Describe the process for creating a student portfolio and identify projects that would demonstrate competency
2. Compare and contrast the concepts of dental hygiene care for patients with various classifications of periodontal health and disease, including scaling and root planning, oral prophylaxis, periodontal debridement, host modulation therapy, and therapeutic endpoints
3. Define the process of formulating a treatment care plan and demonstrate treatment plan presentation
4. Explain the primary purpose in integrating caries management by risk assessment in to the oral healthcare practice
5. Discuss the functional components, design considerations, advanced fulcrum techniques, and customized details regarding the sequence of advanced hand-activated instrumentation
6. Define gingival curettage and explain the rational, indications, contraindications, and controversy surrounding the effectiveness of purposeful curettage
7. Compare and contrast delivery methods of subgingival antimicrobial agents
8. Describe the treatment modifications for patients with special needs; multi symptom disorder/disabilities and non-multi symptom disorder/disability
9. Discuss the dental hygiene process of care in the cross-cultural environment
Clinical Objectives
1. Integrate and perform all aspects of dental hygiene care on a variety of patients at the SRJC dental hygiene clinic. Care will include assessment procedures, recording (charting) of findings, dental hygiene treatment planning, preventative procedures, therapeutic procedures, adjunct therapies, inter-professional collaboration and follow-up care
2. Participates in all dental hygiene clinical rotation duties
3. Perform dental hygiene services for patients at clinical off-site rotations
4. Provides to patients who qualify, interim temporary restorations including follow-up, and sealant placement
5. Demonstrates a high level of professional and ethical conduct with patients, students, faculty, and staff
