1. Perform jazz music with effectiveness and confidence in a small combo.
2. Demonstrate improvisational creativity through the concentrated study and performance of blues and modal jazz compositions.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate the ability to interpret jazz notation with characteristic rhythm.
2. Perform with intonation consistent with a college-level ensemble.
3. Improvise solos effectively utilizing modal and blues scales.
4. Demonstrate listening and performance skills related to interaction with other musicians.
Students repeating Jazz Combo Ensemble will be able to perform more difficult repertoire and perform at a higher level of musicianship each semester.
Topics and Scope

Music rehearsal is a fully-integrated experience that encompasses both lecture and lab activities.
I. Concentrated Study of Blues and Modal Jazz Compositions to Maximize Opportunities for
Creative Improvisation
II. Ensemble Performance Skills such as Intonation, Rhythmic Precision, and Dynamics
III. Public Performance in a Variety of Venues
A. Classroom
B. Outdoor
C. Jazz festival
D. Concert hall
IV. In-Concert Performances and Clinics with Guest Artists
Students repeating Jazz Combo Ensemble will perform more advanced repertoire each semester; thus enhancing their skill level, knowledge of the repertoire, and command of improvisational techniques.

Rehearsal (lecture/lab) Assignments:
1. In-class rehearsal and preparation of selected works
2. Study, practice, and mastery of modal and blues scales
3. Each semester, the selected repertoire may dictate additional assignments
in order to meet the requirements for that literature
4. Outside practice of their instrument (ungraded)
Out-of-Class (lab) Assignments:
1. Participation in additional rehearsals, when called
2. Participation in concerts, tours, and/or other field trips as scheduled
3. Final exam will be a public concert
Students repeating Jazz Combo Ensemble will be held to higher standards of performance with each repetition.
