At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Demonstrate ability to provide assistance as a chairside dental assistant for dental restorative
and preventive procedures.
2. Describe the types of medical emergencies encountered in a dental office and roles staff play
in prevention and management.
3. Describe the effects of the oral environment as it pertains to the use of common dental
materials used in restorative and preventive dentistry.
Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge while assisting for preparation, placement, and finishing of
amalgam, composite, and cast restorations.
2. Demonstrate the positioning of the High Volume Evacuation (HVE) tip; mirror for
retraction, and full mouth rinsing in each area of the oral cavity.
3. Demonstrate placement of nonaerosol and noncaustic topical anesthetic ointment prior to an
injection of local anesthetic solution on a mannequin.
4. Identify and label anesthetic carpules, needles, and syringe and the assembly and disassembly
of an aspirating syringe and proper disposal.
5. Identify the uses, indications, and contraindications of the different types of cements
in dentistry for medications, bases, luting agents, restorative agents, and build-ups.
6. Identify armamentarium, placement and removal of dental dam during procedures and
other isolation devices on a mannequin.
7. Demonstrate knowledge while assisting for the placement and removal of matrices and
dental wedges during restorative procedures on a mannequin.
8. Describe the requirements for the dental impression material for final impressions.
