COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Provide treatment that includes preventative and therapeutic procedures to promote and
    maintain oral health and assist the patient in achieving oral health goals (beginner level).
2.  Evaluate effectiveness of patient treatment, patient education, planned clinical and community
    educational service and make necessary modifications (beginner level).

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
1.  Assess and present a summary of the patient's physical status.
2.  Identify significant medical and dental modifications required before proceeding with dental
      hygiene care, determine proper precautionary procedures (including consultation and/or
      referral) and apply those modifications during dental hygiene care.
3.  Identify possible medical risks to prevent and/or mitigate medical emergencies.
4.  Adhere to infection control protocols.
5.  Provide comprehensive dental hygiene care for assigned patients.  Care will include
      assessment procedures, recording (charting) of findings, problem identification, dental
      hygiene treatment planning, case presentation, gaining patient informed consent,
      implementing the individualized dental hygiene care which may include: preventive
      services, therapeutic procedures, adjunct therapies and evaluation of patient response.
6.  Describe dental hygiene care modifications required with regard to: communication, safety
      precautions, appointment planning, care environment, individualized home care and oral
      manifestations or therapeutic side effects for the delivery of comprehensive dental hygiene
      care for patients with special needs.
7.  Integrate and correlate the basic behavioral and dental sciences as they apply to the care of
      the dental hygiene clinic patients.
8.  Discuss the history and legal environment for the duties authorized by AB1174.
9.  Discuss the science behind partial caries removal and minimally invasive dentistry
10. Identify appropriate patients and teeth for placement of Interim Therapeutic
      Restorations (ITRs)
11. Demonstrate effective placement of ITRs on typodonts and patients
12. Describe considerations following ITR placement including protocols for identifying and
      responding to adverse outcomes 
13. Determine which radiographs to perform in order to facilitate an initial examination by a
      dentist
