1. Apply the knowledge required to care for an ill or injured person in the pre-hospital setting.
2. Demonstrate clinical decision making skills required to formulate a treatment plan for a
patient of any age.
3. Demonstrate proficiency in all psychomotor skills outlined in the California state regulations,
Health and Safety Code, Title 22 and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician.

caring for an ill or injured person.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills with patients, families, and members
of health care team
2. Demonstrate ability to independently perform a thorough patient assessment on an adult or
pediatric patient with a medical complaint or traumatic injury
3. Integrate clinical findings to determine a treatment plan for the adult or pediatric patient with
a medical complaint or traumatic injury in the pre-hospital setting
4. Demonstrate affective behaviors expected of a professional paramedic
5. Demonstrate ability to deliver the full continuum of care to a patient in the pre-hospital
setting
6. Demonstrate ability to function as team leader at the scene of a pre-hospital emergency
7. Demonstrate all methods of delivering oxygen therapy
8. Demonstrate the ability to establish venous access
9. Calculate drug doses and drip rates
10. Demonstrate proper technique in giving an intravenous, intraosseous, intramuscular,
subcutaneous, and oral medication
11. Demonstrate basic and advanced airway management techniques
12. Demonstrate skills necessary to splint/immobilize all types of soft tissue and musculoskeletal
injuries
13. Demonstrate assessment and management of a patient with a traumatic injury in the
pre-hospital setting
14. Recognize normal and abnormal cardiac rhythms
15. Administer appropriate medication to treat abnormal cardiac rhythms
16. Demonstrate assessment and management of a patient with a cardiovascular emergency in
the pre-hospital setting
17. Demonstrate assessment and management of a patient with a respiratory emergency in the
pre-hospital setting
18. Demonstrate assessment and management of a patient with an identified medical emergency
of the endocrine, nervous, gastrointestinal, genitourinary (GI/GU) and reproductive systems
in the pre-hospital setting
19. Demonstrate assessment and management of a patient under the influence of alcohol or
other chemical substance in the pre-hospital setting
20. Demonstrate proper technique of handling infectious disease issues in the pre-hospital setting
21. Assist in a normal labor and delivery in the pre-hospital setting
22. Assess and manage complications of an obstetrical patient in the pre-hospital setting
23. Demonstrate assessment and treatment of a neonate in the pre-hospital setting
24. Demonstrate management of a patient exhibiting a behavioral emergency in the pre-hospital
setting

1. Work 12-56 hr/week (preceptor schedule)
2. Minimum of 40 Advanced Life Support patient contacts
3. Meet minimum number of patient contacts, pathology, and chief complaints as set by
Committee on Accreditation of Emergency Medical Services Professionals
4. Affective and performance evaluations
5. Track patient assessments and skills (documentation)
6. Complete minimum of 40 patient care reports
7. Attendance as mandated by Title 22
