COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1.  Authentically interpret and perform classic and contemporary jazz literature.
2.  Demonstrate technical proficiency in the performance of selected literature.
3.  Sight read college-level literature for jazz ensemble.
4.  Perform improvised solos on classic and contemporary jazz literature.
5.  Evaluate and critically analyze their musical performance for future improvement.
Students repeating Summer Jazz Workshop will be able to:
1. Demonstrate greater technical achievement on their instrument.
2. Articulate musical phrases with greater clarity.
3. Perform with higher standards of intonation.
4. Demonstrate a more sophisticated comprehension of dynamics, phrasing, musical expression, and nuance.
5. Demonstrate greater skill in sight-reading and improvisation.

I.     Sight-reading of classic and contemporary jazz ensemble literature
II.    Rehearsal and performance of classic and contemporary works for jazz ensemble
III.   Study of particular technical challenges specific to the literature studied
IV.   Jazz Articulation Techniques
V.    Jazz Theory and Improvisation
     A. Scales and modes
     B. Seventh chords
     C. Transposition
     D. Techniques for improvisation
VI.   The Components of Musical Expression
     A. Phrasing
     B. Dynamic contrast and nuance, etc.
VII.  Analysis and Comparison of the Different Styles of Jazz
      A. Swing
     B. Cool
     C. Bebop, etc.
VIII. Students repeating Summer Jazz Workshop will perform new literature each semester,
        building on both their skill level and knowledge of the repertoire.  

Assignments:

1.  Approximately 1 hour per week of outside practice per hour of rehearsal. Includes scales and arpeggios in all keys and preparation of ensemble music.
2.  The selected repertoire will dictate additional assignments to meet the requirements for that literature.
3.  Students repeating Summer Jazz Workshop will be held to higher standards of performance with each repetition.
