Basic Police Academy |
Description: | A Basic Police Academy certified by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) for the State of California. This intensive 20 week Academy teaches criminal law, laws of search and seizure, laws of evidence, traffic laws, investigative techniques, patrol procedures, firearms, vehicle operations course, defensive tactics, police report writing, first aid, and cardio pulmonary resuscitation. The Basic Police Academy provides instruction and evaluation of all academic, physical, and behavioral traits required by the State of California to meet the minimum standards to be employed as a peace officer in California. |
Recommended Preparation: | Eligibility for ENGL 100 or ESL 100 |
Limits on Enrollment: | Student must pass California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Entry-Level Law Enforcement test with a minimum T-Score of 42. There is data compiled by POST that indicates a range of T-40 to T-50 is recommended for use by agencies. Because the academy is an entry requirement for a law enforcement position, it is necessary to use this test for entry level. POST has completed studies for both agencies and community colleges indicating success in the academy and on the job based on these scores. Student must provide a medical clearance to participate in the academy physical conditioning program and physical performance tests. Students must pass POST-mandated physical performance test to enter the academy. California residents must pass a criminal history check as outlined in California Penal Code 13511.5. Non-residents must also pass a criminal history check through the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Students must possess a valid driver's license. |
