"I am a teacher! What I do and say are being absorbed by young minds who will echo these images across the ages. My lessons will be immortal, affecting people yet unborn, people I will never see or know. The future of the world is in my classroom today, a future with the potential for good or bad. The pliable minds of tomorrow's leaders will be molded either artistically or grotesquely by what I do.

Several future presidents are learning from me today; so are the writers of the next decades' and so are all the so-called ordinary people who will make the decisions in a democracy. I must never forget these same young people could be the thieves and murderers of the future.

Only a teacher? Thank God I have a calling to the greatest profession of all! I must be vigilant every day lest I lose one fragile opportunity to improve tomorrow."

                                                                                                                                                                                  - Ivan Welton Fitzwater

"Tell me, I'll forget. Show me, I may remember. But involve me, and I'll understand."

-Chinese Proverb

MABUHAY! Welcome to my homepage.

I am a math teacher. The future of the world is in my classroom. It is where I can have the greatest impact.

My teaching philosophy is based on the Chinese Proverb stated above. I always believe that the only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics. I also value the constructivists approach to learning. Learning is not about memorization. It is about constructing new knowledge based on prior knowledge and experiences. Each learner offers various and diverse experiences that would contribute to a richer classroom discussion. It tailors to students responses and encourages them to connect ideas, analyze and reflect their responses. It relies on open ended questions which require dialogues among students.

Every learner has something to share and the potential to excel. Learning is not a passive process; it requires motivation, effort and persistence. Math learning isn__t simply the ability to problem solve and critically think. Learners must be able to explain and communicate their math thoughts in written and in oral formats. Students in a math classroom should not merely be spectators rather they must be active learners. My goal is to help the whole person-the cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions of the human being.

It is healthy for my students to see that I don__t have all the answers to their questions. I consider every encounter with a student as an opportunity for me to be a learner as well.

Finally, change has always been a part of life. As an educator, I need to be able to adapt and respond effectively in a constantly changing world especially in terms of the pedagogies I apply in the classroom as my students deserve to be empowered by their own learning.
