Academic Experience

As an Adjunct Jazz Instructor at Santa Rosa Junior College (since 1996), Pete has taught semester length courses in: Beginning and Intermediate Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Appreciation, Music Fundamentals, and Applied Music (Trumpet). He has taught individual classes on a substitute basis in Intermediate Improvisation, Jazz Combos, Jazz Big Band, and Jazz/Pop Theory, As an Adjunct Instructor at Sonoma State University (1999-2011), he taught semester length courses in: Beginning Jazz Improvisation, Jazz History, Contemporary Jazz Ensembles, and Studio Trumpet. As a Guest Lecturer, Pete taught classes at SSU in Jazz Composition, History of American Music, Brass Ensemble and Jazz Big Band Big-Band. Pete has served on the faculty at Pacific Union College as Trumpet Instructor (for Music Majors) and Napa Valley College as Jazz Appreciation Instructor. Pete has been an active private Trumpet instructor for over 35 years.

Pete has received extensive private trumpet instruction from: internationally recognized Yamaha Trumpet Artist and Clinician Bobby Shew (H. Silver, B. Rich, T. Akioshi, L. Belson bands) as well as: Mario Guineri (LA Philharmonic, Student of: J. Stamp, W. Vacchiano); Mark Inouye (San Francisco Symphony, Student of: R. Mase, P. Smith); Jeff Biancalana (San Francisco Symphony, Student of: C. Geyer, W. Scarlet); Greg Hopkins (B. Rich, B. Maxted bands); Tony Lujan (H. Silver, T. Puente); Paul Fontaine (W. Herman, B. Work and Consulting Experience

Pete has played in ensembles featuring well known artists: B. Shew, C. Fontana, J. Williams, B. Forman, T. Scott, J. Newton, C. Haden, A. Heath, etc. As a featured soloist and lead player, Pete traveled with Carnival, Princess, and Holland America Cruise lines. In the Orchestral realm, he has played with Ukiah and Lake County Symphonies, Cinnebar Theater Opera Orchestra, and Benecia Ballet. He has been active in local theaters, playing shows at Spreckles, Person, and Raven Theaters as well as 6th St. Playhouse. Pete has worked for over 20 years as a Trumpet, Brass, and Jazz Coach and Consultant for High Schools in the Northern California Bay Area. He currently holds a 30 day teaching Permit with the Sonoma County Office of Education and has been cleared by the Department of Justice to work with students in Public Schools. In addition to working with his own groups: Blue Note Collective and Polished Brass Quintet, he has served as Bugler on the Northern California Fair Circuit for over 30 years at: Sonoma, Alameda, San Joaquin, Solano, and Humboldt Counties as well as the Sacramento State Fair and Cal-Expo Harness Racing.

Presentations and Publications

To date, Pete has authored 15 volumes of Jazz Trumpet Solos (transcribing well over 400 improvisations). Pete's transcriptions of Miles Davis' Jazz Trumpet Solos were included with the bonus material accompanying the 2006 and 2009 Concord Music Group re-release of the (late 50's) Prestige recording sessions. Additionally, he has transcribed over 200 original jazz compositions and arrangements by the Blue Note Masters of the 1950's and 60's. Under the guidance of James Newton (Downbeat Poll Winner-Jazz Flute), Pete transcribed and arranged portions of Duke Ellington's "Queen's Suite" which was performed by the Danish National Radio Orchestra in 1991.
