I was born in Houston, Texas, to Deaf parents. I grew up in Houston until I attended and graduated from the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, Texas.

I have been married to Jane M. Hammond Fair, Deaf, of Santa Rosa, California, since 1989. We met while we were students at Gallaudet University in 1983. We live in Fremont, California.

I survived the Gallaudet protest for the Deaf President in 1988 and graduated after the protest without any reprisal.

Jane and I have two children, SaraJane, Deaf and Calton, Hearing. SaraJane graduated from the California School for the Deaf (CSD), Fremont. She attends Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, New York. Calton graduated from the Circle of Independent Learning (COIL), a charter school in Fremont.
