Dr. Anderman studied music theory and composition with Dr. Richard Festinger, Dr. Henry Onderdonk, and Dr. Martin Herman; orchestration with Dr. Donald Para and Dr. John H. Wallace; and jazz arranging with John Prince.
As a guitarist, his mentors included jazz virtuoso (and Joe Pass protégé) Frank Potenza, Martin Austin of the iconic prog rock group Ixt Adux, and Chord Chemistry guru Ted Greene.

Dr. Mark Anderman (Dr. A) is the Music Theory Coordinator at Santa Rosa Junior College, where he has taught for over 20 years and was the recipient of the 2019 Santa Rosa Metro Chamber Excellence in Education award. He was also on faculty at Cypress College for 5 years and taught composition and conducting for 6 years for the Santa Rosa Symphony’s Summer Music Academy. He has over 30 years of performance experience as a guitarist, bassist, singer, and keyboardist in the Bay Area and Greater Los Angeles. Open to multiple styles, his work includes jazz, classical chamber music, gospel, rock, and musical theater.
Dr. A is an accomplished recording artist and producer as well as an active composer of concert music. His fourth album Horizon is due for worldwide release in Winter/Spring 2024. His previous albums are Confluence, Double Vision (recorded in Singapore with Bruce MacLeod), and his debut EP Ascension. Highlights of his concert works include: For Us All (for symphonic band and choir) commissioned for the 2020 grand re-opening of Burbank Auditorium, Thursday Rain (for orchestra) premiered at Jackson Theater in memoriam of the 2017 Sonoma County wildfires, and Pieces of Yesterday premiered by the SRJC Jazz Band and featured by the Sonoma State University Jazz Orchestra at the Green Music Center.
Occasionally, Dr. A also ventures into radio broadcasting: he was featured on Melbourne, Australia's J-Files as an expert on the music of Frank Zappa, and has co-hosted KRCB's Jazz Connections with Dr. Larry Slater ("The Jazz MD").
