COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

1.  Speak, ask, answer, read, and comprehend Italian at moderate speed
     regarding most everyday topics.
2.  Conduct a basic conversation about common daily life topics in Italian.
3.  Describe simple Italian basic facts of current life, past experience,
     and future plans/ predictions orally and in writing.
4.  Communicate fundamental cultural information regarding the Italian-speaking
     world and  differences between American and Italian cultures.

1.  Use and demonstrate comprehension of others' use of Italian vocabulary related
      to  the most common personal and commercial topics.
2.  Formulate questions and declarative sentences and improvise brief paragraph-length
      statements on the most common topics, all in Italian.
3.  Read and react in Italian to simplified passages on a range of cultural and daily life topics.
4.  Write what he/she is able to say in Italian.
5.  Correctly pronounce all Italian words that follow the regular phonological patterns
      and most that do not.
6.  Control with relative ease the following:  frequently used pronouns (subject, object,
      reflexive, and disjunctive pronouns); present, past, imperfect and future tenses of all
      regular and most common irregular verbs; describing sequence of events and using
      common time marker words.
7.  Produce compound and complex sentences involving the most common conjunctions.
8.  Demonstrate comprehension of the main idea when listening to Italian spoken carefully.  
9.  Discuss aspects of Italian-speaking cultures

2.  Italian conversational formulas and the most common idioms.
3.  Improvising paragraph-length personal statements.
4.  Reading and analyzing readings in Italian.
5.  Grammatical terminology.
6.  Italian sentence construction and differences from English syntax.
7.  Creating sentences containing more than one verb tense.
8.  Listening to Italian spoken at a natural speed.
9.  Italian cultural aspects contrasted to American culture.
10. History and culture of the Italian peninsula and its environs.

Assignments:

1.  Read and practice lessons from the textbook/ textbook website (averaging 15 pages per week)
2.  Memorize vocabulary and verb conjugations (averaging 55 words per week)
3.  Written exercises from the textbook/ textbook website (averaging 10 exercises per week)

      listening/speaking practice, etc. (averaging 1 hour  per week)
5.  A variety of increasingly complex readings in Italian, including dialogues, short narratives, and explanatory prose.
