1. Analyze the political, economic, cultural, and social developments in Western Civilization from the establishment of early civilizations to 1648 C.E.
2. Evaluate the causes and effects of historical events.
3. Critically analyze primary and secondary sources as historical evidence.

In order to achieve these learning outcomes, during the course students will:
1. Demonstrate analytical interpretation of the past using historical methodology and examination of primary and secondary sources.
2. Identify and analyze the interrelationships among major world civilizations and their unique contributions to the Western tradition and assess their continuing influence today.
3. Explain historical events and societal change over time and distinguish disciplined historical thinking from fable and antiquarianism.

1. Reading 40 to 80 pages per week. Assignments may include both primary and secondary sources.
2. Writing assignments of 1500-2500 words out of class that may include critical and historical interpretation of primary and secondary sources, reaction papers, analytical essays, and research papers.  
3. Midterm(s) and a final will be given, and these will contain critical thinking questions and may also include objective or short answer questions.

5. Regular attendance and note taking in class is expected along with class participation which may include small group work, extemporaneous question and answer assignments or presentations.
