Emphasis is placed on chairside responsibilities, instrument and equipment identification, four-handed techniques, and sequences of general dentistry procedures. COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Apply knowledge pertaining to chairside assisting for general dentistry procedures.

2. Describe the effects of the oral environment as it pertains to the use of common dental

materials used in restorative and preventive dentistry.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge while assisting for preparation, placement, and finishing of general dentistry procedures. 

2. Demonstrate the proper procedures necessary for effective patient care.

3. Demonstrate the procedure of taking and recording vital signs and identifying normal limits.

4. Describe the team approach of preventing and managing common types of medical emergencies possibly occurring in a dental setting.

5. Demonstrate the clock concepts of operating zones, explain the uses of each zone and demonstrate the positioning of operator, assistant, and patient.

6. Describe and demonstrate the characteristics of professional behavior.      

7. Demonstrate the placement of topical anesthetic ointment prior to an injection of local anesthetic solution on maxillary and mandibular arches.

8. Demonstrate the preparation of an aspirating local anesthetic syringe, cartridge, and needle.
