Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

1.  Discuss the range of folk dance rhythms and forms found in Romania.
2.  Perform a variety of Romanian dances.
3.  Compare and contrast dance regions within Romania.
4.  Perform basic Romanian folk dance vocabulary, leader's calls and
   native vocabulary used for dance figures.

    A. Development of folk dance in Romania
    B. The relationship between Romania and its neighbors as seen
       through dance and music
II.  Romanian Folk Dance Movement Vocabulary and Dance Figures
III. Understanding Leader's Calls and Romanian Dance Terminology
IV.  Repertoire of Dances of Romania (actual dances taught to change each
    semester)
IV.  Structural and Rhythmic Elements
    A. Comparative rhythms and dance patterns in Romanian dances
    B. The role of improvisation and variation in basic dance
       movements throughout Romania
VI.  Influences on Different Ethnic/Regional Styles
    A. Influences of ethnic dress on dance movement
    B. Foreign influences on dance and music
    C. Regional similarities and differences within Romania as
       reflected in its dance

Representative in-class assignments:
1. Learn and practice folk dances.
2. Take one written test (midterm or final) on vocabulary and other
  information conveyed in class and in handouts.
3. Participate in one or two performance exams that will assess knowledge
  of dances.
Representative outside assignments (approximately one hour per week):
1. Read and study handouts provided (1 to 3 pages total).
2. Attend folk dance related activities in the community or view folk
dances on video if unable to attend folk dance activities.
3. Practice folk dance steps and review dances.
