COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Speak near-native sounding German at moderate speed
2.  Comprehend German spoken by native speakers on most common topics
3.  Narrate, describe and persuade both orally and in writing using the past,
     present, and future tense
4.  Ask and answer informational questions in German on a broad variety of topics
5.  Read, comprehend and explain German news items and literary pieces with
    use of a dictionary

Students will be able to:
1. Compose German essays of approximately 500 words on topics of general interest
     covering a broad range of personal and societal issues
2. Converse extemporaneously on a wide range of personal topics with few
    grammatical errors
3. Comprehend German spoken naturally on a wide range of everyday and
     cultural topics
4. Comprehend the general meaning of most German short fiction and non-fiction
     with some use of a dictionary
5. Discuss, interpret and answer questions of fiction and non-fiction selections
     orally and in writing
6. Produce and employ with relative fluency most regular and irregular verb conjugations,
    subject and object pronouns, present, past, future and subjunctive verb forms
7. Produce and employ with relative fluency most everyday German vocabulary
     and common idioms
8. Demonstrate correct pronunciation of familiar German words as well as most
     unfamiliar ones

I. Vocabulary, Idioms, Sentence Structure, and other Linguistic Elements of German relating
      to Various Topics, including:
    A. Vacation and travel, animal life
     B. Physical and medical conditions, health and well-being, German health care system
    C. Family life, marriage and partnership
     D. Monetary affairs and banking, Germany's multicultural society, art and literature
 
II. Specific Elements of Grammar include:
    A. Prepositions to talk about places
    B. Review of formal and informal imperative
    C. Prepositions for giving directions
    D. The subjunctive form of modal verbs
    E. The passive voice
    F. Accusative and Dative reflexive pronouns
    G. Word order of accusative and dative objects
    H. Indirect questions
    I.  Word order in dependent and independent clauses
    J. The genitive case
    K. Genitive prepositions
    L. Expressing possibilities: "würde", "hätte" and "wäre"
    M. Causality and purpose: "weil", "damit", "um" and "zu"
    N. Review of nominative, genitive, dative and accusative cases
    O. Review of nominative, dative and accusative pronouns and their usage
