COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Apply landscaping terminology such as plant identification, plant selection and care, tool

    identification and use.

2.  Recognize and respond to verbal and written directions when interacting with landscaping

    supervisors, employees, and customers.

3.  Read and analyze landscaping plans and summarize findings.

4.  Recommend plants for various landscape scenarios.

 

Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

1. Label landscaping materials with correct terminology

2. Select and match pictures and names of plants to preferred growing environment as well as

    choosing correct care directions

3. Discuss safety rules for hand and power tool use and identify tools

4. Practice giving and following oral commands when prompted

5. Respond to written commands when prompted

6. Label all significant planting areas, irrigation systems, and structures on a landscaping plan

7. Explain landscaping plan layout listing steps to complete tasks outlined in the plan

Topics and Scope

I. Plant Selection for Local Landscape Applications

    A. Factors that affect plant growth, including water, nutrients, light, air flow, and climate

     B. Techniques for successful plant propagation e.g. budding, grafting, cuttings, seeds

    C. Principles of plant propagation to determine space needed between plantings

    D. Identify plants on a landscape plan

II. Safe and Appropriate Operation and Maintenance of Hand and Power Equipment

    A. Selection of proper tools

    B. Specific safety procedures for hand tool usage

    C. Safety suggestions for lawnmowers and blowers

III. Proper Landscape Planting and Maintenance Practices

    A. Maintaining basic irrigation systems

    B. Edging, watering, and mowing practices

    C. Drought resistant care

    D. Pruning ornamental schrubs, trees, and fruit trees

IV. Obtaining Employment in the Landscaping Field

    A. Resume and cover letter writing

    B. Interviewing techniques

    C. Networking and job seeking skills using computer technology

Assignments:

1. Unit tests which include listening, completing graphic organizers, filling in the blanks,

    selecting multiple choice answers, and completing written sentences and short

    paragraphs

2. Plant identification exercises, individually and in groups (4 - 6)
