COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Identify conditions in the oral cavity as they relate to the formulation of a comprehensive

    dental hygiene care plan to provide treatment that includes preventative, therapeutic,

    and pain control procedures, that promote and maintain oral health using patient

    centered, evidence-based goals (beginner level).

2.  Provide planned educational services using appropriate interpersonal communication skills

    and educational strategies to promote optimal health (beginner level).

3.  Identify appropriate medical and dental precautions in patient treatment; determine proper

    precautionary procedures including consultation and referral and apply these procedures

    during treatment (beginner level).

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

1.   Set-up and operate the intraoral camera for patient care.

2.   Compare and contrast normal and abnormal conditions, such as basic caries and restoration

      material such as composites, amalgams, crowns, as viewed on radiographs.

3.   Determine which radiographs to perform in order to facilitate an initial examination by a

      dentist.

4.   Describe the appearance of radiographic images with the dentist's supervision.

5.   Establish dental hygiene treatment/care plans through the use of case studies.

6.   Explain the rationale for professional preventive care for infants and toddlers.

7.   Define the type and process of early childhood caries.

8.   Provide appropriate counseling on feeding/diet management, oral hygiene and fluoride for

      parents of infants and toddlers.

9.   Describe behavior/treatment management of children during dental hygiene care.

10. Describe possible oral conditions of an adolescent.

11. Explain motivation modifications that are appropriate for adolescents.

12. Describe behavior/treatment management of adolescents during dental hygiene care.

13. Introduce some common oral findings during pregnancy.

14. Discuss preventive measures during pregnancy.

15. Describe modifications in plaque control and treatment modality that may be necessary

      during pregnancy.

16. Discuss topics that could be included in dental counseling during pregnancy.

17. Describe behavior/treatment management of adolescents during dental hygiene care.

18. List key age-related physiological changes often found in the geriatric population.

19. Describe the psychosocial considerations in the geriatric population.

20. Identify age related and medication related changes of the oral tissues commonly found in

      the geriatric population.

21. Describe several treatment adaptations related to the geriatric population.

22. Describe behavior/treatment management of geriatrics during dental hygiene care.

23. Explain the challenges of oral health care delivery to long-term care patients.

24. Discuss how visual, auditory, speech and cognitive deficiencies can be identified and at least

      partially compensated for in preventive dentistry planning and implementation.

25. Perform appropriate preventative procedures, including but not limited to fluoride

      treatments, interim temporary restorations including follow-up, and sealant placement on a

      variety of patients.

26. Determine, select, and use the proper instrumentation procedures used in advanced and

      periodontal maintenance therapy on patients.

27. Demonstrate the ability to perform instrumentation utilizing ultrasonic scaling devices.

28. Explain the rationale/justification for gingival curettage in periodontal therapy.

29. Describe the controversy and current attitude surrounding the effectiveness of purposeful

      curettage.

30. Discuss effective treatment planning for gingival curettage procedures based on individual

      patient conditions.

31. Describe the procedures for performing gingival curettage.

32. Perform dental hygiene services for patients at clinical off site rotations.

33. Develops and presents an ePortfolio.
