Catalog Description:

The SRJC Jazz Bands are dedicated to the rehearsal and performance of classic and contemporary literature for large jazz ensemble. MUSCP 32D is designed for experienced musicians who are able to perform at the college level and is intended for the most advanced players. Students in this course will have more accountability within the ensemble, and may be called upon to assist in the troubleshooting of problems specific to their instrument and/or to lead sectional rehearsals. Emphasis is on the achievement of a professional-quality artistic standard. The bands perform at least two major public concerts per semester, which may include an off-campus festival performance.

COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.       Perform effectively in a large jazz ensemble.

2.       Execute a wide range of big band music accurately, with stylistically appropriate articulations and attention to detail with minimal input from the director (horn players).

3.       Accurately interpret a wide range of big band music with stylistically appropriate comping and rhythmic setups with minimal input from the director (rhythm section).

4.       Improvise in a big band medium at an advanced level.

5.       Demonstrate university-level proficiency on their instrument.

 

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.      Accurately interpret and perform classic and contemporary jazz band literature of greater difficulty with emphasis on phrasing and nuance.

2.      Demonstrate technical proficiency in the performance of selected literature with emphasis on increasing dexterity, range and dynamic control.

3.      Demonstrate increased accountability through leadership responsibilities within the ensemble.

4.      Accurately sight read college-level literature for large jazz ensemble with attention to correct articulations, dynamics, and stylistic performance practice.

5.      Evaluate and critically analyze their musical performance for future improvement.

 

Students repeating Jazz Band will be able to:

1.      Demonstrate greater technical achievement on their instrument.

2.      Articulate musical phrases with greater clarity.

3.      Perform with higher standards of intonation.

4.      Demonstrate a more sophisticated comprehension of dynamics, phrasing, musical expression, and nuance.

5.      Demonstrate greater skill in sight-reading.

Topics and Scope

I.     Advanced musical study addressing university-transferable skills in phrasing and interpretation.

II.    Troubleshooting and correcting problems unique to each instrument.

III.   Sight-reading of college-level jazz band literature.

IV.   Rehearsal and public performance of classic and contemporary works for large jazz ensemble.

V.     Study of particular technical challenges specific to the literature studied.

VI.    Jazz articulation techniques specific to the literature studied.

VII.   Special challenges in intonation and blend in the performance of the literature studied.

VIII.  The components of musical expression, such as phrasing, dynamic contrast, and nuance.

IX.    Differences in musical style specific to the literature studied.

X.     Critical analysis and comparison of the different artistic goals specific to the literature studied.

XI.    The role of improvisation in jazz performance with emphasis on achieving a professional sound.

XII.   Performance etiquette and proper performance dress.

 

Students repeating Jazz Band will perform new literature each semester, building on both their skill level and knowledge of the repertoire.

Assignments:

1.      Preparation of the music outside of the classroom with emphasis on good practice habits and effective use of the rehearsal time available. The minimum practice time should be 1 hour per week per hour of rehearsal.

2.      Attendance at and participation in all rehearsals and concerts.

3.      Attendance at and participation in sectional rehearsals or rehearsals at different venues with soloists when scheduled.

4.      Final exam will be a public concert.

5.      The selected concert repertoire will dictate additional assignments to meet the requirements for that literature.

 

Students repeating Jazz Band will be held to higher standards of performance with each repetition.
