This course is designed to build upon introductory concepts that explore opportunities in the health care field through lecture.  Career exploration will focus on the following health career profiles: medicine, nursing, dental, nutrition, public health, therapy and rehabilitation. Anatomy and physiology will be introduced with a focus on the endocrine, muscular, and skeletal systems. Students will complete a professional development module preparing them for volunteer and job opportunities.

Prerequisites/Corequisites:
Course Completion of HLC 121 and HLC 121L AND Concurrent Enrollment in HLC 122L

Recommended Preparation:
Eligibility for ENGL 100 or ESL 100

Limits on Enrollment:
Due to hospital requirements students must be 16 years of age or older and meet the following immunizations and vaccination requirements; MMR, Varicella-Zoster, Hepatitis B, Tdap, seasonal influenza, and current TB clearance.

COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Indentify opportunities for employment in the focused health career profiles: nursing, dental, nutrition, public health, therapy and rehabilitation.

2.  Demonstrate basic knowledge of nutrition applied to health and disease.

3.  Develop a professional social media profile, educational outline draft, resume, and cover letter relevant to a health occupation of choice.

4.  Identify basic anatomy and physiology of the endocrine, skeletal, and muscular systems.

 

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Describe and explain the compliant medical and legal requirements for participation in health occupations.

2. Describe workplace ethics and explain the importance of ethical standards, confidentiality, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and patient rights in healthcare professions.

4. Students will conduct research on a health career profile of choice: write a 2-4 page paper related to the associated scholarship and financial aid resources, educational and experience requirements, professional associations, career pathways, salary ranges, and job responsibilities.

5. Disease-focused group project: conduct research on diabetes, associated conditions that increase risk. Write a 3-5 page paper describing a current community health issue in Sonoma County and prevention strategies. Present research project in class.
