COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Learn the proper techniques of making prints using the stencil process
   with squeegee.
2.  Understand the proper and safe use of printmaking materials and tools.
3.  Explore a variety of stencil methods, from the most direct to the
   highly technical.
4.  Create fine art prints which reflect the nature of the materials and
   processes involved.
5.  Experiment with a variety of approaches for making a visual statement.
6.  Develop a working vocabulary of printmaking terms and a first-hand
   understanding of their meaning.
7.  Develop creative thinking skills and the exercise of aesthetic judge-
   ments inherent to the visual arts.
8.  Practice aesthetic criticism and gain a better understanding of form,
   color and composition.
9.  Relate silkscreen printmaking to other forms of printmaking and the
   fine arts in general.

Topics and Scope

1.  Construction of the silkscreen frame, stretching fabric, taping and
   sealing.
2.  Demonstration of proper cleanup techniques to remove inks and stencils
   from screen.
3.  Mixing colors and proper ink consistency for printing.
4.  Review of various artists' work and analysis of their ideas.
5.  Completion of outside research and production of preparatory sketches
   as required.
6.  Ovrprinting with transparent inks to create new color mixtures.
7.  Exploration of figure/ground possibilities and the utilization of the
   paper as an important element in the print.
8.  Investigation of expressive brush techniques to make stencils.
9.  Designing and executing a precise, knife-cut stencil that is adhered
   to the screen.
10.  Composing a collage of photgraphic elements to be used in a photo-
    stencil print.
11.  Use of the graphic arts darkroom equipment and photo processes to
    create film positives and negatives.
12.  Photostencil process including: exposure, washout and adhering.
13.  The propr care and handling of finished prints, editin numbering,
    signing, matting, etc.

Assignments:

1.  One-color print using paper stencil.
2.  Multi-color print using transparent inks.
3.  Progressive blockout print.
4.  Knife-cut film stencil print.
5.  Direct brush and resist method.
6.  Photostencil and collage print.
The subject matter for the above assignments may involve self-portrait,
landscape, still life, the figure, and non-objective forms.
