Catalog Description:

Theory and practice of photography.  Basic skills in developing, enlarging composition, print quality, and photographing a variety of assigned subjects. May sometimes be offered as Art 36, parts I and II.  In this format there is one hour of lecture and two hours lab per week.  Part I is prerequisite to Part II.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Students will gain skills in basic photographic techniques, including

camera operation, the use of composition and lighting as applied to sub-

ject matter, and the processing of their own photographic imagery in a

laboratory situation.

2.  Also gained will be an understanding and appreciation of the photo-

graphic process, including basic theory behind the use of light sensitive

materials and lenses to form an image.

Topics and Scope

1.  An overview of the history of photography.

2.  The camera and its operation, including lenses, shutters, and exposure

controls.

3.  Film and exposure, including proper exposure techniques and film pro-

cessing.

4.  Printing and enlarging, both theory and practical darkroom application

5.  The picture, including composition, perspective and the use of light-

ing.

6.  Photographing people and closeups, including use of lighting for these

situations.

7.  Other photographic problems, including the use of filters, action, and

special considerations of color photography.

Assignments:

A variety of assignments in black and white, which emphasize the use of

pattern, texture, form, composition and design while photographing various

assigned subjects or situations.
