Planning and implementation of total care of patients with acute medical and surgical problems; intravenous therapy as it relates to the scope of practice of the the vocational nurse. Continued development of biological, physiological, spiritual and mental health concepts as they apply to the nursing care of acutely ill patients (with an emphasis on pre/post-operative care).

Prerequisites/Corequisites:
Completion of NRV 51, NRV 51L, & NRV 58A with a grade "C" or better.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Plan and implement nursing care for patients with complex medical
surgical conditions.
2. Assist with the development of written nursing care plans of assigned
patients.
3. Accurately administer and record medications and treatments for the
assigned patients.
4. Demonstrate necessary skills for the administration of injectable
medications.
5. Demonstrate ability to assess wounds, remove staples/sutures using
principles of universal precautions and asepsis.
6. Apply principles of intravenous therapy in the clinical setting by
recognizing signs/symptoms of infiltration, accurately calculating  drip
rates and recognizing appropriate solutions and maintaining patency.
7. Apply principles of therapeutic communication with assigned patients.
