COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

  Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to create
an original garment design in fabric without the use of a paper
pattern, by draping the fabric directly on the dress form.  The
student will also be able to make or adapt a dress form to conform
to an individual's specific measurements.
 Specific objectives of course:  students will be able to:
Draft a pattern for a dress form cover based on an individual's
measurements.
Utilize the fitted cover to create a custom-fitted dress form.
Utilize the dress form to create designs directly from fabric,
including, but not limited to, the following categories:  bodices,
skirts, dresses, collars, sleeves
Discern which designs are most appropriate for draping techniques
vs. flat pattern techniques
Compare the differences between draping with woven and knitted
fabrics
Demonstrate their understanding of draping techniques by completion
of an original design draped on the dress form

Topics and Scope

Taking measurements for basic cover draft
Drafting of dress form cover from measurements
Conversion of standard dress form into custom-fitted dress form
Techniques for draping both woven and knitted fabrics on dress form
to create designs of: bodices, skirts, dresses, sleeves and collars
Finalizing draped designs to be completed as garments: grainline,
seam allowances, lase, hems, etc.

Assignments:

-Completion of a fitted dress form cover
-Completion of a fitted dress form
-Practice designs: a basic fitting shell, princess seam bodice,
flared and pleated skirts, standard sleeve and collar styles,
designs with knit fabric
-Completion of 2 full-scale original designs in fabric
