Demonstration and supervised practice of intermediate skills based on scientific principles and concepts from theory. Planning and implementing intermediate patient care are done in the simulated clinical setting relevant to steps in the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementing, evaluation and documentation. Students will practice and demonstrate skills in the lab setting prior to the assignment of these skills in the clinical setting.

Intermediate nursing skills are based on scientific principles learned from the previous semester. Skills are correlated to theory, related to steps in the nursing process, and accurate documentation is stressed. Students demonstrate competent skill performance in a simulated clinical setting.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. Incorporate theoretical principles from the fundamentals skills course
into the planning and implementation of intermediate nursing skills for
adult and child patients.
2. Use anatomical landmarks to perform physical assessments and implement
therapeutic procedures for adult and child patients.
3. Demonstrate psychomotor competency in the performance of selected
intermediate skills.
4. Communicate therapeutically with adult and child patients.
5. Teach fundamental self-care skills to patients and parents of child
patients.
6. Plan and implement preoperative and postoperative care.
7. Evaluate effectiveness of nursing interventions on adult and child
patients.
8. Work cooperatively as a member of a team to ensure that all members
achieve learning objectives.

5. Practice skills as a member of a learning team, soliciting instructor
feedback when needed.
6. Adapt procedures to meet patients' individual needs.

8. Independently demonstrate competent performance of all skills, within a
maximum of three "check-off" competency demonstrations.
