A seminar and clinical course designed to continue to expand and develop dental hygiene skills in preventive therapy, oral prophylaxis, initial preparation and maintenance therapy. Students will become proficient in scaling and root planing procedures, pain control, and gingival curettage. Dental hygiene assessment(diagnostic) and treatment planning skills will be refined. The student will also become proficient in adjunct therapeutic skills.  Learning experiences will be conducted within a human needs framework. Care will be patient centered.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

At the end of the course the student will be able to (with a minimum of
90% accuracy):
1.  Identify medical and dental precautions in patient treatment,
   determine proper precautionary procedures (including referral) and
   apply those procedures during treatment.
2.  Apply current emergency procedures whenever necessary for the
   patient's well-being.
3.  Apply current principles of infection control.
4.  Integrate and perform all aspects of dental hygiene care on a variety
   of patients at SRJC dental hygiene clinic.  Care will include
   assessment procedures, recording (charting) of
   findings, dental hygiene diagnosis and treatment planning, preventive
   procedures, therapeutic procedures, adjunct therapies and follow up
   and maintenance care.
5.  Take and record patient medical, dental, and dental hygiene histories.
6.  Perform and record findings from extra and intraoral examinations.
7.  Conduct and perform accurate periodontal examinations.
8.  Image and use radiographs in recognizing normal and abnormal
   conditions of the oral cavity.
9.  Request consultations for further medical or dental clarification when
   indicated.
10. Establish dental hygiene treatment/care plans.
11. Assess patient s needs for pain control procedures; administer such
   procedures and identify and manage complications which may occur.
   pain control includes such things as behavior modification, local
   anesthesia administration, and administration of nitrous oxide
   conscious sedation.
12. Perform appropriate preventive procedures on a variety of patients.
13. Accurately determine, select and use the proper armamentarium used in
   initial preparation and maintenance therapy on patients.
14. Demonstrate an ability to perform instrumentation and ultrasonic
   procedures with confidence.
15. Accurately detect and remove plaque, calculus, and altered cementum
   from unattached tooth surfaces.
16. Accurately perform the following skills: scaling and root planing,
   gingival crettage, administration of local anesthesia,
   administration of nitrous oxide conscious sedation, margination
   procedures, placing occlusal sealants, fluoride therapy, imaging and
   interpreting radiographs, finishing and polishing restorations.
17. Perform dental hygiene services for patients at extramural clinical
   sites.
18. Demonstrate a high level of professional and ethical conduct with
   patients, students, faculty and staff.
19. Demonstrate a high level of proficiency in the comprehensive
   management of patient care.
20. Determine the need, the correct time in treatment sequencing, and the
   appropriate mechanism for referral to appropriate referral sources.
   i.e. physician, general dentist, dental specialist.
