Continuation of Art 36.  Emphasis on creativity and perfection of techniques used on varied subject matter.  May sometimes be offered as Art 37 Parts I and II.  In this format there is one hour of lecture and two hours of lab per week.

Prerequisites/Corequisites:
Art 36 or Art 36A and 36B. 35mm camera or larger format camera required.


Recommended Preparation:
Basic knowledge of camera operation, darkroom equipment, processing of film and making prints.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Students will further refine and perfect photographic skills obtained
   in Art 36 while photographing a variety of subject matter.
2.  Also acquired will be an appreciation and understanding of photo-
   graphic aesthetics and history.

Topics and Scope

1.  An approach to photography-pictures as a language, contributions of
   significant photographers.
2.  Approaches from the utilitarian, documentary and creative points of
   view.
3.  Important picture qualities-including impact, stopping power and
   graphics.
4.  Photography as art-examples and uses.
5.  Subjects-Various types and how approached.
6.  The Photographer-Qualities needed and why we make photographs.
7.  The Picture-Composition and controls,symbols of photography.

Assignments:

A variety of assignments in black and white which place emphasis on the
creativity and problem-solving abilities of the individual student as app-
lied to photographic situations.  Included will be some assignments which
use non - traditional techniques and materials, including high contrast
and solarization techniques.
