Summer maternal child clinical course for vocational nursing part time program. Application of concepts learned in prerequisite and corequisite theory and skills lab courses. Care of the normal and acute care of the obstetric, neonate, and pediatric clients. An emphasis on normal growth and development process in relationship to any disease processes is emphasized. The family as a whole system of interactions for patient teaching is viewed in culturally sensitive and diverse settings (such as ICFDD, nursery schools and acute maternal child hospital settings.) Orem's self-care deficit theory is the base for applying the nursing process for the assigned clients.

Summer semester maternal child clinical course for the vocational nursing part-time program. Application of theoretical concepts from prerequisite and corequisite courses. Clinical assignments form the basis of nursing care using Orem's Theory. Nursing care of clients includes settings of the acute perinatal units, ICFDD facilities and nursery schools.

COURSE CONTENT
Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Under the following conditions:
1. Direct supervision of instructors and resource nurses in labor/delivery
postpartum and newborn settings.
2. Students will be supervised less closely in nursery schools, and ICFDD
rotations by clinical instructor, while being guided in observations and
skills by licensed staff.
3. Students will be accountable and responsible for actions and practice
in both fundamental and increasingly complex intermediate skills.
4. Students will apply theoretical concepts to the individual clinical
setting and the asssigned patients.
The Student will:
1. Apply all previously learned concepts maintaining prior skills and be
able to apply rationales for the care being given.
2. Prioritize and organize care of 2-4 patients in the acute setting and
begin to develop skills for the care of clients in ambulatory care.
3. Apply culturally and developmentally appropriate communication skills
and client care during rotations in obstetrics, nursery schools, and
intermediate care facilities for the developmentally delayed residents.
4. Apply ethical principles to a variety of maternal child care settings.
5. Document nursing assessments accurately in maternal child settings.
6. Develop patient centered teaching guides for postpartum clients and
families with children.
7. Perform as a multidisciplinary team member in the maternal child
setting and communicate appropriately the data collected on clients in the
individual clinical rotations.
8. Prepare and administer age appropriate immunizations and medications
to infants and children in maternal child settings.
9. Apply principles of age appropriate nursing interventions in the care
of infants through adolescents in clinical rotations (i.e. safety, diet,
play, rest, fluids and elimination).
Topics and Scope

Accountability for the following topics and scope includes:
1. A retention of all prior clinical skills learned from both of the
fundamentals courses and past prerequisite courses to apply to the
clinical assignments of this course.
2. Clinical roation for the observation and participations in the birthing
process, immediate postpartal assessments, newborn assessments, and
observations and participation in daycare of normal 2-6 year olds and in
care of developmentally delayed clients in residential care settings.
3. Preparation for assessment and patient teaching in ambulatory care
clinics with immunization schedule and CHDP clients.
4. Participation in the documentation of normal growth & development on
client records as appropriate.
5. Patient/client and parent teaching skills related to a variety of
family issues and common childrearing concerns.
6. Common nursing procedures specific to the maternal/child setting:
a. Postpartum and newborn assessments.
b. Sterile technique for "setting up" for delivery & cesarean section.
c. Administration of Vitamin K and erythromycin ointment to newborns.
d. Sitz bath, special peri-care, cord care, circumcision care, breast
care (to name a few).
e. Special safety measures (i.e. holding infants, positioning, clearing
airways, and other specifics related to developmental phases).
f. Care of developmentally delayed children with special skills for
feeding (i.e. gastrostomy feedings), assessing, and behavioral
interactions.
g. Pharmacolgic interventions for needs of postpartum, postop c-section
and labor/delivery, preterm patients.
Assignments:

1. Preparation of adequate data bases and worksheets for planning care.
2. Assignments of 2-4 patients per clinical day in the acute perinatal
postpartum rotation of 4-6 days.
3. Assignments of accurate observation and data collection of normal vs.
abnormal growth and development of preschool children and developmentally
delayed children in nursery schools and ICFDD settings.
4. Participation in the VN scope of care in the ICFDD residential care
setting with a focus of planning care and administering treatments and
meds for a minimum of 1 client.
5. Observation of a minimum of 1 delivery, 1 labor patient, 1 c-section,
and routine of newborn nursery care for a total of a 4-5 day rotation (as
patient care setting permits).
6. Administration of all medications within the VN scope of practice for
obstetric and pediatric clients.
7. Give a minimum of one teaching demonstration to peers for a specific
perinatal or newborn problem/scenario.
8. Participate in ward conferences by offering examples of problems and
peer review.
