Introduction to the oral environment and dental materials; instruction in the properties, characteristics, and manipulation of dental materials. Instrumentation for operative dental procedures such as composite and amalgam restorations, crown and bridge procedures, veneering and bonding techniques.  Mannequin instruction in preliminary impression technique.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

 1.  Identify and describe how the properties of the oral cavity relate
    to dental material selection.
2.  Identify and describe the properties of alginate impression
    materials.
3.  Demonstrate the preparation of trays, mixing of alginate, loading
    of trays and taking of both maxillary and mandibular alginate
    impressions on manniquin.
4.  Demonstrate the correct mixing, vibrating and pouring of gypsum
    products for each dental plaster and stone.
5.  Identify the uses, indications and contraindications of cements in
    dentistry for medications, bases, luting agents, restorative agents
    and build-ups.
6.  Explain the advantages and disadvantages of esthetic restorative
    materials as compared to amalgam restorations.
7.  Compare the composition, properties, indications and contraindica-
    tions of amalgam, composite and cast restorations in dentistry.
8.  Demonstrate assisting during the preparation, placement and finishing
    of amalgam, composite and cast restorations.
9.  Describe the requirements for the dental impression material for
    final impressions.
10.  Demonstrate the technique of assembly and assisting during the
    placement and removal of a dental dam and matrix for Class II
    restorations on a manniquin.
