Students will synthesize and apply knowledge and skills acquired in paramedic clinical (EMC131A, 131B) and will work on an approved advanced life support unit.  This is the final course in a series designed to give students the field experience required for licensure as a paramedic in California. This course meets standards mandated by the California Health and Safety Code Title 22 and the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards (NEMSES) published by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT).

Students will synthesize and apply  knowledge and skills acquired in paramedic clinical (EMC131A, 131B) and will work on an approved advanced life support unit.  This is the final course in a series designed to give students the field experience required for licensure as a paramedic in California. This course meets standards mandated by the California Health and Safety Code Title 22 and the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards (NEMSES) published by the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT).

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1. Apply the knowledge required to care for an ill or injured person in the pre-hospital setting.
2. Demonstrate clinical decision making skills required to formulate a treatment plan for a patient of any age.
3. Demonstrate proficiency in all psychomotor skills outlined in the California state regulations, Health and Safety Code, Title 22 and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
4. Demonstrate personal behaviors consistent with professional and employer expectations while caring for an ill or injured person.
5. Demonstrate ability to function as a competent, safe entry level paramedic.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills with patients, families, and members of health care team
2. Demonstrate ability to independently perform a thorough patient assessment on an adult or pediatric patient with a medical complaint or traumatic injury
3. Integrate clinical findings to determine a treatment plan for the adult or pediatric patient with a medical complaint or traumatic injury in the out of hospital setting
4. Demonstrate affective behaviors expected of a professional paramedic
5. Demonstrate ability to deliver the full continuum of care to a patient in the out of hospital setting
6. Demonstrate ability to function as team leader at the scene of an out of hospital emergency
7. Demonstrate all methods of delivering oxygen therapy
8. Demonstrate the ability to establish venous access
9. Calculate drug doses and drip rates
10. Demonstrate proper technique in providing intravenous, intraosseous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and oral medications
11. Demonstrate basic and advanced airway management techniques
12. Demonstrate skills necessary to splint/immobilize all types of soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries
13. Demonstrate assessment and management of a patient with a traumatic injury in the out of hospital setting
14. Recognize normal and abnormal cardiac rhythms
15. Administer appropriate medication to treat abnormal cardiac rhythms
16. Demonstrate assessment and management of a patient with a cardiovascular emergency in the out of hospital setting
17. Demonstrate assessment and management of a patient with a respiratory emergency in the out of hospital setting
18. Demonstrate assessment and management of a patient with an identified medical emergency in the out of hospital setting
19. Demonstrate assessment and management of a patient under the influence of alcohol or other chemical substance in the out of hospital setting
