2. Demonstrate comprehension of Italian spoken by native speakers on most common topics.
3. Conduct conversations in Italian on a wide range of topics in multiple tenses.
4. Read and interpret fiction and non-fiction texts in Italian with adequate grasp of main ideas and details.
5. Speak Italian with accurate and intelligible pronunciation.
6. Convey personal opinions in Italian on everyday and social topics such as news, film, music, literature and contemporary issues.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Compose essays of 500 words in Italian on topics of general or societal interest.
2. Converse and speak extemporaneously on a wide range of topics.
3. Comprehend Italian spoken naturally on a wide range of common topics.
4. Comprehend the general meaning of short fiction and non-fiction written in Italian with the
help of a dictionary.
5. Formulate sentences in Italian that include appropriate pronouns, prepositions and
conjunctions as well as the correct usage of a broad range of regular and irregular
verbs in all tenses and moods, including "se" expressions (periodo ipotetico).
6. Produce and employ with relative ease most regular and irregular verb conjugations.
7. Correctly use and place pronouns (subject, reflexive, direct, indirect object and disjunctive).
8. Comfortably produce and use most everyday Italian vocabulary words, common idioms, and
some theme-specific vocabulary extracted from readings.
9. Correctly pronounce Italian words.
