The SRJC Jazz Band is dedicated to the rehearsal and performance of classic and contemporary literature for large jazz ensemble. Designed for experienced musicians who are able to perform at the college level. The emphasis is on the incorporation of stylistically and harmonically appropriate improvisation within the big band medium. The band performs at least two major public concerts per semester, which may include an off-campus festival performance.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Perform effectively in a large college-level jazz band with appropriate rhythm, pitch, tone,
    technique, musicality, and professionalism.

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Accurately interpret and perform classic and contemporary jazz band literature.
2. Appropriately improvise over chord changes with attention to limitation of form and
    interaction with background figures.
3. Demonstrate technical proficiency in the performance of selected literature with emphasis on
    increasing dexterity.
4. Sight read college-level literature for large jazz ensemble accurately.
5. Evaluate and critically analyze their musical performance for future improvement.
 
Students repeating Jazz Band will be able to:
1. Demonstrate greater technical achievement on their instrument.
2. Articulate musical phrases with greater clarity.
3. Perform with higher standards of intonation.
4. Demonstrate a more sophisticated comprehension of dynamics, phrasing, musical expression,
    and nuance.
5. Demonstrate greater skill in sight-reading.
6. Perform a more extensive repertoire.

Music rehearsal is a fully-integrated experience that encompasses both lecture and lab activities.
 
I.     Advanced Technical Study Dedicated to Increasing Agility, Control of Articulation, and
       Control of Intonation in Extremes of Register
II.    Sight-Reading of College-Level Jazz Band Literature
III.   Rehearsal and Public Performance of Classic and Contemporary Works for Large Jazz
       Ensemble
IV.   Study of Particular Technical Challenges Specific to the Literature Studied
V.    Jazz Articulation Techniques Specific to the Literature Studied
VI.   Special Challenges in Intonation and Blend in the Performance of the Literature Studied
VII.  The Components of Musical Expression, such as Phrasing, Dynamic Contrast, and Nuance
VIII. Differences in Musical Style Specific to the Literature Studied
IX.   Critical Analysis and Comparison of the Different Artistic Goals Specific to the Literature
       Studied
X.    Shaping Improvised Solos over a Limited Number of Choruses
XI.   Improvising Around Complex Background Figures

Students repeating Jazz Band will perform new literature each semester, building on both their skill level and knowledge

Repeating students will be held to higher standards of performance with each repetition.
