Catalog Description:

Advanced level course for students with technical proficiency wishing to further their concentration on photo-imagery as a means of self-expression by preparation of a portfolio. Includes studies of significant photography of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as related to problems facing contemporary photography today.

Prerequisites/Corequisites:
Completion of ART 36 (or ART 36A and ART 36B) and ART 37.

Recommended Preparation:
Thorough knowledge of photographic equipment, materials and techniques.

COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.  Students, working with individually selected subject matter, will

strengthen their technical and aesthetic abilities as a photographer by

producing a semester - long portfolio project.

2.  Weekly critique sessions, involving both students  and instructor,will

broaden the ability of the individual to view and discuss photo-imagery

taking into account both conceptual and technical considerations.

3.  Continuing emphasis on technical quality, as well as compositional and

aesthetic elements, will urge students to produce high quality  work.

4.  Discussion and viewing of work by significant 19th and 20th century

photographers will broaden the background knowledge of photography by

individual students.

Topics and Scope

1.  A review of the basic photographic processes.

2.  Film speed and exposure, including individual exposure/development

   tests.

3.  Large format photography-an overview of equipment and techniques.

4.  Discussion of the contributions to the state of the art today by

   significant 19th and 20th century photographers.

5.  Approaches to subject matter, including uses of lighting and proper

   exposure.

6.  Ongoing preparation of an individual portfolio, including presentation

   of work in progress for discussion.

7.  Mounting and display of photographs.

8.  Final critique of completed portfolio.

Assignments:

Students will work individually on self-selected dubject matter, approved

by the instructor in advance, with the semester goal being to produce a

portfolio of black and white images of the highest possible quality.

Individuals are expected to submit work-in-progress for critique and

discussion on an ongoing basis during the semester.
