COURSE CONTENT

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1.  Demonstrate the ability to comprehend presentations on matters of
   environmental concern by writing lucid essays summarizing each
   presentation.
2.  Demonstrate the ability to think critically about environmental
   issues by writing careful critical analyses of each presentation.
3.  Exercise tolerance and respect when speaking and writing about
   controversial points of view.
4.  Demonstrate (in writing or in response to specific objective
   questions) an understanding of the nature of the field of
   environmental studies and the various disciplines that contribute
   to it.

Topics and Scope

Various environmental issues and topics in environmental studies will be
covered, but these issues and topics will vary from semester to semester.
Topics such as the following will be addressed:
1.  Human population
2.  Agriculture
3.  Global warming
4.  Ozone depletion
5.  Pollution/waste
6.  Endangered species
7.  Rainforests
8.  Energy and the environment
9.  Environmental ethics
10. Environmental art
11. Environmental psychology
12. Environmental history
13. Environmental policy/politics/economics
14. Environmental literature
15. Environmental design

Assignments:

Eight papers of approximately 3 pages in length, each of which summarizes
and critically analyzes one of the eight lectures.
Multiple choice final exam that covers the "Orientation to Environmental
Studies."
