COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.   Identify and discuss the basic parts and function of a sewing machine.

2.   Identify and discuss appropriate pattern, fabric, and notions choices of a beginning sewing project.

3.   Identify and execute simple alterations to a commercial pattern to insure proper fit.

4.   Demonstrate basic sewing ability by constructing a garment using a commercial pattern.

 

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.  Identify, select, and care for cotton and/or cotton woven blend fabric.

2.  Interpret and apply the correct vocabulary and terminology related to basic and clothing construction.

3.  Interpret pattern symbols and accurately alter a basic pattern.

4. Apply critical thinking skills to interpret the pattern instruction sheet to accurately lay out and construct an article of clothing.

5.  Operate a sewing machine, iron, and small sewing equipment safely and efficiently.

6.  Recognize the importance of interfacing and select the proper type

and application process.

7.  Demonstrate the ability to:

   a. Mark and use pattern symbols appropriately.

   b. Use various types of seams and seam finishes appropriately.

   c. Construct darts, pockets, facings, collars, cuffs, waistbands, gathers, hems, buttonholes, sleeves.

   d. Attach pockets, facings, buttons, and other fasteners, collars, sleeves, cuffs, zippers.

8.  Construct a technique shirt and one garment.

     B.  Pressing techniques and equipment

V.   Basic construction techniques

     G.  Sleeves, cuffs, and bands

     H.  Hems (machine and hand techniques)

     I.  Buttons, buttonholes, and fasteners

Assignments:

1.  Construct a technique shirt and a final project projects according to class guidelines:

     a.  Skirt, or shorts with a sew-on waistband and zipper (centered or lapped, or waistline with casing).

     b.  Blouse, shirt, or dress.

2.  Prepare approximately 15-20 samples of techniques demonstrated in class, including hand stitches, machine stitching, dart, types of seams and  seam finishes, collar, facing, waistband (optional), button and buttonhole,  zipper, hems (hand and machine), pockets, gathers, fastener.

3.  Determine amount of fabric to buy using size, style, nap, and width of fabric.

4.  Two quizzes; final exam.

5.  Read from text 10-15 pages per week

Writing: Assessment tools that demonstrate writing skill and/or require students to select, organize and explain ideas in writing.		Writing 0 - 0%
None
This is a degree applicable course but assessment tools based on writing are not included because problem solving assessments and skill demonstrations are more appropriate for this course.
Problem solving: Assessment tools, other than exams, that demonstrate competence in computational or non-computational problem solving skills.		Problem Solving 5 - 15%
Homework problems to include working on projects and samples.
