1. Apply a professional code of ethics in all aspects of professional endeavors, and adhere to
state and federal laws, recommendations, and regulations in the provision of dental care.
2. Describe the history, educational requirements, and roles and responsibilities of each member
of the dental team, including the dentist, registered dental hygienist, and registered dental
assistant.

Upon completion of the course, student will be able to:
1. Describe the highlights in the history of dentistry during the early times, Renaissance, and
early America.
2. Describe the highlights in the history of dental hygiene and dental assisting.
3. Explain the role of Hippocrates in history and the basic premise of the Hippocratic Oath.
4. Identify the individuals credited with being the first dental hygienist and first dental assistant.
5. Describe the role and purposes of the professional associations for dentistry, dental hygiene,
and dental assisting.
6. Discuss the role of the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental
Association (CODA).
7. Describe the characteristics of dental professionalism.
8. Describe the scope of practice for the nine specialties of dentistry.
9. Describe the various roles of a dental assistant in a private practice.
10. Explain the roles of a dental hygienist as described in the American Dental Hygiene
Association (ADHA) Code of Ethics.
11. Explain how the Code of Ethics contributes to the awareness of, and sensitivity to cultural
diversity.
12. List and discuss the ethical principles involved in ethical dilemmas encountered in a dental
practice.
13. Explain the purpose of the California Dental Practice Act.
14. Describe the responsibilities of the California Dental Board.
15. Explain the licensing and renewal process in California for the registered dental hygienist and

16. Discuss the two types of statutory law and how each applies to the practice of dentistry.
