COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.       Perform jazz music with effectiveness and confidence in a small combo.
2.       Demonstrate improvisational creativity through the concentrated study and performance of mainstream jazz repertoire.
 

Objectives: Untitled document
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
 
1.  Demonstrate the ability to create improvised solos with characteristic jazz phrasing over basic chord progressions.
2.  Demonstrate listening and performance skills related to interaction with other musicians.
 
Students repeating Jazz Combo Ensemble will be able to perform more difficult repertoire and perform at a higher level of musicianship each semester.

Topics and Scope

1.      Concentrated study of representative works from mainstream jazz repertoire
2.      Ensemble performance skills such as intonation, rhythmic precision, and dynamics
3.      Public performance in a variety of venues: classroom, outdoor, jazz festival, and concert hall
4.      In-concert performances and clinics with guest artists
 
Students repeating Jazz Combo Ensemble will perform more advanced repertoire each semester; thus enhancing their skill level, knowledge of the repertoire, and command of improvisational techniques.

Assignments:

1.  In-class rehearsal and preparation of selected works.
2.  Harmonic and structural analysis of the selected works.
3.  A minimum of one hour of outside practice is required for each hour of in-class rehearsal.
4.  The final exam will be a public concert.
5.  Each semester, the selected repertoire may dictate additional assignments in order to meet the requirements for that literature.
 
Students repeating Jazz Combo Ensemble will be held to higher standards of performance with each repetition.
