COURSE CONTENT

Student Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.   Demonstrate competence of moderate sewing techniques.

2.   Identify and discuss challenges presented by specialty fabrics.

3.   Identify personal fit alteration needs and execute the necessary changes on a commercial pattern.

4.   Produce a garment using a commercial pattern that incorporates appropriate style and fit for an individual figure.

 

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1.  Interpret and apply the correct vocabulary and terminology related to intermediate and advanced clothing

   construction.

2.  Identify, select, and care for fabrics appropriate for advanced clothing projects.

3.  Alter patterns to accomodate a personal figure.

4.  Identify and apply time-saving techniques in the construction of projects.

5.  Demonstrate knowledge and proper use of interfacings, interlinings, underlinings, and lining fabrics and techniques for proper installation.

6.  Demonstrate the ability to:

   a.  Sew with a variety of fabrics, such as wool, silk, napped fabrics and other specialty fabrics.

   b.  Construct bound buttonholes, welt pockets, inset pockets, hand-sewn zipper, and decorative trim.

   c.  Operate a manual sewing machine and/or computerized sewing machine, overlock machine.

   d.  Work with more complex patterns.

Topics and Scope

Topics will include but not be limited to:

1.  Sewing Equipment

     A.  Serger overlock machines

     B.  Computerized sewing machines

     C.  Steam press, pressing tools.

     D.  Special sewing equipment for particular tasks

2.  Alterations and Pattern Selection

     A. Alterations for personal figures

     B.  Use of a muslin to fit garment to body

3.  Fabric Selection, Use and Care

     A.  Wool

     B.  Plaids

     C.  Napped fabrics (velvet, velveteen, corduroy)

     D.  Silky fabrics (rayon, polyester, silk)

     E.  Knits (lingerie, jersey)

     F.  Lining fabrics

     G.  Interfacings, interlinings, underlinings

4.  Advanced Construction Techniques

     A.  Bound buttonholes

     B.  Welt pockets

     C.  Sewing with wool, napped fabrics, silky fabrics, knits

     D.  Matching plaids

     E.  Lining (hand and machine stitching)

Assignments:

1.  Construct 2-3 projects using one or more categories below:

   A.  Lined pants, skirt, shorts and/or vest

2.  Requirements for projects --include the following:

   A.  Specialty fabrics (napped, plaid, silky, wool,etc.)

   B.  Lining

   C.  Bound buttonholes and/or welt pocket

   D.  Matching plaids (optional)

3.  Construct samples of:

   A.  Seams and seam finishes for working with wool, silky,

        and napped fabrics

   B.  Bound buttonholes

   C.  Decorative trim

   D.  Hand stitches

   E.  Hem finishes for wool, silkies, napped fabrics

4.  Take 2-4 quizzes and final

5.  Read from text 10-15 pages a week

None
This is a degree applicable course but assessment tools based on writing are not included because problem solving assessments and skill demonstrations are more appropriate for this course.
