Emphasis is on meeting the needs of patients with psychiatric illnesses. Knowledge and skills acquired in lecture-discussion are applied in psychiatric clinical settings. Course is designed for Licensed Vocational Nurses [LVNs] whose prelicensure coursework did not include psychiatric nursing.

1. Apply evidence-based psychiatric theoretical concepts to clinical practice.
2. Use nursing process to provide safe nursing care for psychiatric patients.
3. Collaborate with patients, families, and members of the interdisciplinary care team to prioritize psychiatric patient care needs and promote optimal wellness.

Upon completion of this course, the student will:
1. Discuss the theoretical basis for psychiatric nursing practice.
2. Compare and contrast the neurologic function of persons with and without psychiatric illnesses.
3. Describe behavioral patterns associated with psychiatric illnesses and their interference with psychiatric patients' ability to meet self-care needs.
4. Discuss pharmacologic and behavioral interventions to assist psychiatric patients to meet their self-care needs.
5. Compare and contrast pathophysiology, clinical presentation and therapeutic modalities of psychiatric illnesses occurring in different phases of the lifespan.
6. Discuss how psychiatric illness affects clients' interactions with the criminal justice system.
7. Make focused assessments of clients with acutely and chronic illnesses.
8. Use problem solving and facilitative communication skills to conduct interviews and teaching sessions with acutely and chronically ill patients.
9. Describe community resources for the treatment of chronic illness and maintenance of mental health.
10. Administer psychiatric drugs safely and appropriately.
11. Use nursing process to devise care plans and to deliver care for patients with chronic illnesses.
12. Evaluate strategies for promoting optimal wellness and managing chronic illnesses in the outpatient setting.
