Knowledge and skills acquired in lecture-discussion are applied in psychiatric clinical settings. Course is designed for Licensed Vocational Nurses [LVNs] whose prelicensure coursework did not include psychiatric nursing.

Outcomes and Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

Upon completion of this course, the student will:
1. Discuss the theoretical basis for psychiatric nursing practice.
2. Compare and contrast the neurologic function of persons with and without psychiatric illnesses.
3. Describe behavioral patterns associated with psychiatric illnesses and their interference with psychiatric clients' ability to meet self-care needs.
4. Discuss pharmacologic and behavioral interventions to assist psychiatric clients to meet their self-care needs.
5. Compare and contrast pathophysiology, clinical presentation and therapeutic modalities of psychiatric illnesses occurring in different phases of the lifespan.
6. Discuss how psychiatric illness affects clients' interactions with the criminal justice system.
7. Make focused assessments of clients with psychiatric illnesses.
8. Use problem solving and facilitative communication skills to conduct interviews and teaching sessions with psychiatric clients.
9. Describe community resources for the treatment of psychiatric illness and maintenance of mental health.
10. Administer psychiatric drugs safely and appropriately.
11. Use nursing process to devise care plans and to deliver care for clients with psychiatric illnesses.
